Hugh - Service Manager
Staff Spotlight: Hugh Hill
Finding Peace, Purpose, and a Bench at River Garden
Hugh is one of the dedicated individuals helping to shape the future of River Garden. We caught up with him on a sunny afternoon to talk about his favourite views, big ambitions, and what makes our unique community so special.
A Quiet Spot in the Sun
When asked for his favourite place on the River Garden site, Hugh’s answer is immediate and vivid:
"My favourite spot is at the top of the hill next to the bees. There is a beautiful view over the gardens down to the river, it’s south facing so it catches the sun, and the curved garden wall reflects the heat and just adds that little bit of shelter. It’s quite stunning."
It sounds like the perfect place for reflection, mindfulness, and just breathing it all in!
The Future: Boldly Going into Recovery
Hugh is clearly optimistic about what River Garden will become:
"Everyone sees potential in River Garden, and I’m no different. For me though, it's the ability to use the space as a genuinely therapeutic, relaxing, engaging, and healing space. There is a new team starting, and they will bring the place to life. I know they’ll bring the heart and healing back to life. River Garden will be an amazing place for people to recover"
He draws inspiration for this future from an unexpected place: "I would say Gene Roddenberry, he imagined a future of peace, inclusion, exploration, and where technology could make anything possible. I think River Garden can boldly go, and who knows, the furthest edges of the solar system might be closer than you think. Watch this Space!"
The Uniqueness of Community
What truly sets River Garden apart, according to Hugh, is its blend of quiet rural setting and active public engagement:
"I love how we can create that sense of peace in a rural setting, but at the same time, the public actively connect, with not just the space but the staff, volunteers, and residents. It is very much a community and there is a lot of care. Many of the regulars at the Bothy have been coming for years and know residents, past and present, and share their care for people. It’s quite something."
Hopes for Residents
Hugh’s greatest hope is that residents leave with a sense of forward momentum and belonging:
"I hope their experience is one of community, connection, ambition, opportunity, and hope. The residency is only for 6 months, but I hope people will remain connected, and we will always welcome and involve past residents. Home is somewhere else, but River Garden will always be homely."
