May - Recovery Worker
Staff Spotlight: May Dykes
My Why
Becoming a recovery worker is a true privilege. Being allowed into people's lives at their most vulnerable moments—and supporting them as they flourish and grow—is work that fills my soul with gratitude.
I believe River Garden is a unique sanctuary in Scotland. The estate has a beautiful energy and stunning scenery that offers endless potential for therapeutic work. It’s more than just a place; it’s a family and a community where residents can truly transform their lives.
Advice for the Journey
If you are considering recovery, my best advice is simply to try. You won’t know what you are truly capable of until you take that leap of faith in yourself. Along the way, remember to be kind to yourself. Patience and self-compassion are the most important tools you can carry.
I am also passionate about changing the conversation around addiction in Scotland. We need to challenge the stigma and the "social acceptance" of alcohol and gambling issues, and move toward a deeper understanding of the circumstances that shape people's lives.
Spirit & Self-Care
To stay grounded and give my best to our residents, I prioritise my own spiritual well-being. My mornings begin with mindful breathing and shamanic drumming to centre myself. In the evenings, I love nothing more than a "meditation bath" with tealight candles and essential oils.
Outside of work, my heart is filled with joy by the nightly "chit-chats" I share with my son. I also celebrate the Winter Solstice, using it as a sacred time to reflect on the year, honour loved ones, and celebrate the people who matter most.
A Few Favorites
- Favorite Place in Ayrshire: Failford Woodlands. It’s a Scottish Wildlife Trust Reserve where I trained in my countryside rangering skills.
- Favorite Movie: The Lord of the Rings trilogy. I love the representation of camaraderie—how people from different ranks and backgrounds come together to endure a difficult journey.
- A Good Giggle: I’ll be honest—I’m rubbish at remembering jokes, but I’m always the first to enjoy a good laugh!
