Laura - Recovery Worker

Staff Spotlight: Laura Happell

A Life Transformed

My journey into recovery began in December 2024, and it changed my life in ways I never thought possible. From that moment, I knew I wanted to give back to others who find themselves in similar situations. Deciding to become a recovery worker was the best decision I’ve ever made, and I have never looked back.

I am incredibly excited about the holistic approach we take here at River Garden. Our stunning natural surroundings play a vital role in the healing process; there is a unique peace that comes from being in nature, and I love seeing how it helps the people we support find their own balance.

Hope for the Future

If you are considering recovery, my message is simple: Do it! Taking that step allows you to gain a life beyond your wildest dreams.

However, I know that fear can often hold people back. I am deeply concerned by the stigma that still surrounds addiction in Scotland. Too often, the fear of judgement prevents people from admitting they have a problem and reaching out for help. I’m here to tell you that there is no judgement—only support.

Peace & Restoration

To keep myself well, I focus on the simple, essential things. I love spending quality time at home with my family and taking my dogs out for long walks. I also believe in the power of rest—plenty of sleep is essential for me, and I’m a big believer in the restorative power of a good nap!

For true peace and serenity, I always head to the water. The beach is my absolute favourite place; I don’t think I could ever live anywhere that didn't give me easy access to the shore.

A Few Favourites

  • Favourite Movie: Love Actually. I have loved it forever—Hugh Grant’s famous dance scene never fails to make me laugh!
  • Favourite Cracker Joke: What do you get if you eat Christmas decorations? Tinsillitis!
