Laura - Recovery Worker

Staff Spotlight: Laura Muir

The Reward of Growth

I chose to become a recovery worker because I am a compassionate, kind, and caring person who knows first-hand that change is possible. Having walked the path of addiction myself and supported others through their journeys in fellowship, I know how rewarding it is to provide guidance. There is nothing quite like watching someone grow, rebuild their confidence, and gain independence.

For me, recovery is a broad and inclusive journey—whether it’s overcoming drugs, alcohol, and gambling, or healing from trauma and health challenges. My goal is to help residents break the cycle, repair family relationships, and, above all, ensure they feel safe, heard, and never judged.

The Energy of River Garden

I think River Garden is absolutely stunning. There is so much for the residents to do here to aid their progress, and the atmosphere is always so welcoming, with smiling faces and friendly chats. I can’t wait to welcome new residents and help them begin their unique journey in such a supportive environment.

Routine & Reflection

Self-care is the foundation of my life. I follow a dedicated routine that includes meditation every morning and night. A vital part of my process is a "nightly inventory," where I review my day to see what went well, what I can improve, and what I need to let go of. To de-stress and feel my best, I also love to stay active through walking, running, and going to the gym.

When I need to find my "happy place," I head straight to the beach. I love to chill out and listen to the waves, sunbathe, and soak in the sound of laughter around me.

A Few Favourites

  • Favourite Movie: Step Brothers. I love comedy and I love to laugh! My sister and I used to watch this all the time; it always lifts my spirits if I’m feeling low.
  • Favourite Cracker Joke: What do you call cheese that isn't yours? Nacho cheese!
